New Ways In Coloring Gray Hair… Sorta

The hardest thing about coloring my gray hair is making it happen.  I should cover my gray at least 12 times-per-year… but it’s more like six times. I love coloring with Clairol’s Natural Instincts semi-permanent because it isn’t damaging.  But I’m too lazy busy to keep it up.  I have the brush-in color wand to cover gray roots for my in-between-color but it washes out immediately.

Last week, I found myself staring at my long gray roots thinking… “Isn’t there a marker that lasts for a week? Why yes, it’s called a Sharpie and I’m going to use one right now.”   Aside from accidentally drawing liver-spots on my hair line, the Sharpie marker covered my gray hair.  And voila, I was out the door gray-hair-free.

That evening…my new Sharpie hair color washed out and the silver returned.  Big. Sad. Face.  Apparently, permanent doesn’t always mean permanent.  Crazy.  Even crazier is my sudden vision of my daughter getting a lower back tattoo while telling herself… “Hey, I read somewhere Sharpie Markers wash out so maybe this tattoo isn’t really permanent.”

Moving on… here’s a list of things to try:

  • TouchBack – basically a marker with a wider tip…  though, probably more efficient than a Sharpie.
  • Mr. Sketch Smelly Markers – Markers that smell like licorice and cinnamon.
  • Orando Brandi – Washes out.

Maybe I will check out Whole Foods next.  Basically, I want a marker that doesn’t wash out.  Is this a biological gray hair issue?
